Quinton Hazell asked JH Kemp to remove machines from their site in Barcelona
and to transport, dismantle and refit them at their Colwyn Bay operation in Wales.
The machines were located on the ground, first and second floors of a building situated on a main route into Barcelona.
Removal involved the jacking and skating of the machines to each floor’s access point, and without using scaffolding on the building.
Firstly, we moved machinery from the first floor, some five meters above ground level, using a manual extension to a Versa 25/35 lift.
Machinery on the second floor was nine meters above ground level and access was only possible from the main road a safe and innovative solution was required.
We fabricated a steel platform and then rigged it from a mobile crane parked below.
The equipment was then skated to the access point and onto the platform where it was secured and lifted down to a waiting vehicle for shipment.
The platform was rigged at ground level using spreader beam slings and chain blocks, and then lifted into position and secured with para bolts.
We couldn’t stop the traffic whilst carrying out this procedure, so after liaison with the local authority, we sited our crane in the parking lane and closed the inside lane.
Our last visit was the most challenging part of the whole operation requiring planning which incorporated clearance of the remaining machinery from the first and second floors. The no-scaffolding restriction was still in force, but the main challenge was the operational requirements to minimise down time for the fitters, electricians and riggers.
A second rigging crew was provided at the Welsh end of the project to ensure the machines were safely offloaded and positioned to the client’s requirement.
